The Play-room Project.

The Assignment

Turn a first floor primary suite from a makeshift kids playroom back into an adult space.

The Challenge

Remove a bulky wall, closet and door without damaging — or redoing — the radiant heat flooring. The client wanted to turn an awkward, cluttered vestibule into the emotional center of the room, a moody focal point.

The Concept

A quietly dramatic, lived-in architectural alcove—one that balances intimacy with openness.

A floating walnut desk and soft upholstered chair create a place for focus and pause, while the two-sided water vapor fireplace, grounded in glossy black granite, becomes a shared hearth rather than a divider.

The warm plaster pony wall, opened above the fire, allows sight-lines into the larger room, so the space feels connected rather than enclosed—inhabited, not hidden. Moody, low lighting and tactile materials soften the dark floors, letting warmth and calm take precedence over utility.

Overall, the vibe is a tad moody; editorial yet deeply personal: a hybrid of workspace, retreat, and architectural moment—designed to be used, lingered in, and quietly INHABITED rather than merely looked at.
